Discover How to Pray God’s Way: Powerful Prayers for Women

If you stop and really think about it, prayer is a phenomenal privilege you have to communicate with the all‐powerful God of the universe—who hears your prayers! Prayer is also an opportunity to bare your heart and pour out your soul to your loving heavenly Father—who cares deeply for you.

Remember that in the Bible we are told countless times that we are to pray—to pray frequently, fervently, always, without ceasing, constantly, in and about everything. We are also told to pray purposefully—to pray according to the will of God because if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us” (1 John 5:14).

Prayers for a Woman’s Heart by Elizabeth George is not meant to teach you mechanics of prayer—the hows, the whens, the whys, and the whats—although hopefully it will be helpful to you as you draw closer to God. Instead it is meant to be used more like a devotional—a tool or a prompt for your own personal and private times of prayer.

God already knows your heart and your needs, and He wants to hear your prayers. He is available to listen to you for as long as you want to talk with Him, and as often as you desire to approach Him. And on those occasions when you want to pray but aren’t sure what to say, His Holy Spirit will intercede on your behalf (Romans 8:26‐27).

As a child of God, knowing Him and being able to talk with Him through prayer is your great privilege. Take advantage of this blessing often.

Below is devotional excerpt from Prayers for a Woman’s Heart to help get you started on your journey toward a life of prayer.

Praying—God’s Way

Lord Jesus, You have said in Your Word that if I ask anything in Your name, You will hear and answer my prayer. Dear Savior, search my heart and its motives when I pray. Help me always to ask whether the things I request are Your will or something I selfishly want to see accomplished. Draw me near to You so I can listen for Your direction and pray with godly purpose. Today I pray specifically that my thoughts, heart, motives, and prayers will be pure and pleasing in Your sight. Thank You, Lord. I’m listening!

Amen.

Knowing how dependent the disciples had become on Him, Jesus spent the evening before going to the cross reassuring His disciples that He would provide them with the necessary resources to accomplish their work on earth without His presence. He was going to send a “Helper”—the Holy Spirit—who would be a personal presence in each of their lives. In addition, He promised that “whatever you ask in My name, that I will do” (John 14:13). Praying in Jesus’ name meant that the disciples should make sure their prayers were consistent with what Jesus would want, not what they might selfishly desire. The answers to their prayers would come based on Jesus’ merit, not on any merit of the disciples.

Jesus was telling us there is a right way to pray—God’s way. For instance, we love to pray for the health and well‐being of ourselves or others. And we love to pray for protection and provision. There’s nothing wrong with these requests, but what is behind these prayers? Often we are asking for what we think is best for us and our loved ones, rather than what would best pursue God’s glory.

As you pray, be sure to lift your motives before the Lord. When you bring your requests to Him, ask Him to take a close look at your heart. Be willing to acknowledge any selfish or sinful motives and adjust them to what you know is His will. Your goal is to match your motives with what God, in His Word, tells you is pleasing to Him.

Prayer, or talking one‐on‐one with the God of the universe, is an incredible privilege. So purpose to pray daily. Pursue a life of prayer. And participate in the blessings of seeing God’s will done both in and around you.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

MATTHEW 6:9-10
