Day 144

Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!” Acts 5:29

Though the Roman government granted the Sanhedrin their authority, when the religious leaders told the apostles not to preach the gospel, they did so anyway. When told, “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” the apostles insisted they must obey God, not human authorities.

Sometimes it seems that the American church’s highest value is what Francis Schaeffer called “personal peace and affluence.” We want to be accepted by everyone. We don’t want to be controversial. Above all, we don’t want to suffer.

It’s time for Christ-followers to stand up and say, “We must speak and live truth, regardless of the consequences.” No matter what direction our earthly country may be going, it is our never-ending heavenly country we should faithfully represent.
