Rachel’s Secret

By BJ Hoff

Bestselling author BJ Hoff promises to delight her many faithful readers with her compelling new series, The Riverhaven Years. With the first book, Rachel’s Secret, Hoff introduces a new community of unforgettable characters and adds the elements readers have come to expect from her novels: a tender love story, the faith journeys of people we grow to know and love, and enough suspense to keep the pages turning quickly.

When the wounded Irish American riverboat captain, Jeremiah Gant, bursts into the rural Amish setting of Riverhaven, he brings chaos and conflict to the community—especially for young widow, Rachel Brenneman. The unwelcome “outsider” needs a safe place to recuperate before continuing his secret role as an Underground Railroad conductor. Neither he nor Rachel is prepared for the forbidden love that threatens to endanger a man’s mission, a woman’s heart, and a way of life for an entire people.

Editorial Reviews

“Hoff is a master storyteller and her characters live long after the book is closed. I can't wait to read book two!”

Rachel’s Secret is full of surprising twists and plots rarely seen from other authors, which I found refreshing.”

“Hoff has proven herself to become a new favorite in both the Amish and the Historical realms for me. She keeps the story moving and brings the characters and cultures to life before my eyes. While the story is primarily a romance she weaves it into a rich plot rife with adventure, secrets, puzzles and twists both for the characters and the reader. I look forward to the upcoming releases both in this series and other offerings by this author.”

“You can always count on Hoff to bring you unforgettable characters…”

“This was my first book by this author, and I absolutely loved it! It is excellent in its ability to hold the reader until the end. I did not want to put this book down! Every page brought a new twist, and I couldn't wait to get to the end to see what happens. It is the perfect blend of history, Amish, suspense, romance and God. It is filled with wonderful tension from beginning to end…one of the best Amish historical novels I have ever read.”

“Author BJ Hoff writes wonderful historical fiction with stories that stay with the reader long after the book is closed. In Rachel’s Secret we meet Rachel Brenneman, an Amish widow, and her family. Rachel’s life takes a dramatic turn when an ‘outsider’ is thrust upon her to care for in his time of need. I love the way the author shows us how any type of relationship with an outsider is discouraged, but one that might lead to more than friendship goes against everything Rachel’s faith requires, even demands. When all is said and done, will Rachel follow her faith or follow her heart? Author B.J. Hoff is a master storyteller and her characters live on the page and in the heart. I eagerly await book two!”

“I have honestly never really read a book about the Amish before, but this story was fascinating! I was hooked right from the start, and it taught me a lot about the culture. I read it in 3 to 4 days time—a record for me, and I just hated to put it down! I loved the way the characters came alive, and can’t wait to see what is going to happen next! September is so far away—what will we do until then?!”

“One of BJ Hoff’s cornerstones is character development. In Rachel’s Secret, not only do we step into the lives of memorable characters, this particular story’s opening chapters make it impossible for the reader to put the book down. A perfect blend of people, drama, and faith, salted with a touch of gritty reality—another of this writer’s hallmarks. I particularly admired the way the author develops Rachel’s internal struggle to live by her Amish faith in a world that is often cruel, evil, and unfair. Can’t wait for the second book in this series!”
