Midnight on the Mississippi begins the new Secrets of the South Mysteries from bestselling author Mary Ellis. These complex crime dramas follow an investigator’s quest to make the world a better place…solving one case at a time.
New Orleans—Hunter Galen, a stock and securities broker, suspects his business partner, James Nowak, may be involved in embezzling their clients’ money, but he’s reluctant to jeopardize their friendship based on suspicion alone. After James turns up dead, Hunter realizes his unwillingness to confront a problem may have cost James his life.
Nicki Price, a newly minted PI, intends to solve the stockbroker’s murder, recover the missing millions from the client accounts, and establish herself in the career she adores. As she ferrets out fraud and deception at Galen Investments, Hunter’s fiancée, Ashley Menard, rubs Nicki the wrong way. Nicki doesn’t trust the ostentatious woman with an agenda longer than the Mississippi River. Ashley seems to be hiding something, but is Nicki’s growing attraction to Hunter—a suspected murderer—her true reason for disliking Ashley?
As they encounter sophisticated shell games, blackmail, and murder, Nicki and Hunter’s only option is to turn to God as they search for answers, elude lethal danger, and perhaps discover love along the way.

“I could only imagine walking into my work place office and finding my partner dead on the floor in a pool of blood! I found I was often placed right into the scenes of this book. I could imagine the wind in my face on Lake Pontchartrain, hiding in the Swamp with alligators and snakes for company, or maybe eating delicious Cajun food and dancing in New Orleans! I was pulled into the story and didn’t see the ending coming. A mysterious death, suspense and romance was put together in a mystery I had a hard time putting down—I’d recommend it. If you like a little family drama, a suspenseful mystery and a lady detective who goes to any end to get her man you will like this one!”

“Once this book gets rolling, hang on, it’s quite a ride! My only complaint was that I wished Hunter was more assertive. Great story!
“I would recommend this to readers who love mystery and suspense because there’s plenty of both in this book.”

“The story captured me right from the start. Lots of mystery, love, faith, hope and determination. The setting and the characters were absolutely wonderful. Characters that you loved and you hated. I was on the edge of my seat reading this story it was so amazing! Lots of mystery to keep you wondering what would happen next. I had a hard time putting this book down. I am so looking forward to reading the next book in this series. 5 stars!”
"There's a lot going on, both in the current timeline and from Nicki's past, to keep the reader turning the pages with plenty of fun banter and toe-clenching romance. Read it!"

"As with all of Mary Ellis' novels, Midnight on the Mississippi will keep you turning pages chapter after chapter. Detailed descriptions lend credence to the plot. Well-developed characters are totally believable. Nicki's wry sense of humor and down-home expressions make her as lovable as your best friend. If you enjoy suspense, romance, and a touch of humor, you won't be disappointed in Mary Ellis' new novel."
—Susan Simpson, author
"I had a hard time putting this book down to get anything done. The characters are imperfect but human. As in other books by Mary Ellis, you get to know the characters and their surroundings, as if you are an active bystander. This is because the author takes pains to learn about the area she uses as the background so even dialogue, music, and foods served are pitch-perfect."
—Carrie Wolfgang
"Author Mary Ellis continues to amaze me with her versatility—not only is she a master of the Amish genre, but also of historical romance, and now, with Midnight on the Mississippi, of romantic suspense. There were so many twists and turns in this book that I couldn't put it down and devoured the book in just three reading sessions. Her characterization is amazing and spot-on, and her portrayal of New Orleans and the bayou culture is so well-done that by the time I finished the book I wanted to be in New Orleans eating an beignet. Bravo, Ms. Ellis—please keep these great books coming!"
