A Story About Disability and Discovering God’s Image in Every Person

54321( 5 )

WINNER OF THE 2023 TGC BOOK AWARD IN THE CHILDREN'S CATEGORY

"A delightful book to help our children understand how we are all different and we are also the same."—
Trillia Newbell, author of God's Very Good Idea and The Big Wide Welcome

This children’s picture book follows a sibling of a child with a disability as they go through their day. A simple story with an important message, Like Me helps kids recognize the many similarities they share with disabled kids and model a loving and understanding approach to the differences.

“God made you, God loves you, God is kind to you.”

It can be hard for children to take those three life-changing truths into their hearts and treat others with love and understanding, especially when they encounter those whose needs differ drastically from theirs.

Through a sibling’s eyes, young readers will tag along on a day of a child with a disability. As the two siblings play with friends, go to therapy, and spend time with family, relatable comparisons will help children understand a different type of family life, building empathy for children with disabilities along the way.

Like Me opens the door to meaningful talks with your child about empathy, compassion, diversity, and God’s love for them and others.

Laura Wifler does such a great job in her newest book on disability - walking us through a day in the life of a child with disabilities. It is such a sweet story that depicts a therapy waiting room, a physical therapy session in a gym, mealtimes, playtimes and the in-between times too. As parents/caregivers of a daughter with disabilities, this book is a true reflection of what we believe about her disabilities and the truth that we speak to her and her siblings. Whether you’re looking to supplement your classroom with children’s books on disability, or your Sunday school class, your home or as a gift for friends, this IS the book to buy.

I have three sons, two of which have Down syndrome. The storyline and illustrations in this book so beautifully portray what our life can look like. This is a great resource for any parent wanting to teach their child about showing kindness and having understanding for those with disabilities. Its inclusive manner of incorporating the younger brother with disabilities into everyday life things can help children learn to imitate the same with fellow children. I have mom friends who have a desire to help their children engage easily with others with disabilities but don’t know how. Having this book on their shelf will be a great start.

I love the illustrations of the physical therapy office that helps visualize for others what they might find there. I also greatly value the mantra the mother tells her sons at the end, and have started saying it to my sons. Ten out of ten recommend buying this book not only on your bookshelf, but also for a friend or family member too!

Being a huge fan of Laura Wifler’s work, I quickly preordered this book last fall and have not been disappointed since it arrived. With winsome writing and beautiful illustrations, Like Me gives children an approachable, solid, God-infused way to learn about children with disabilities. The day-in-the-life narrative pulls in the reader in a nonjudgmental manner that is also not “preachy” or solely nonfiction descriptions, easily allowing learning, empathy, and joy to grow in young minds.

My 2 1/2 year old asks to read this book on repeat. And I love that this book provides an avenue for discussion on a topic my family wouldn’t otherwise experience in our daily life. Like Me earns a well deserved spot on our bookshelf now and for many years to come.

Walks the reader through the day in the life of an older brother whose sibling has global disabilities. I think the book is a great tool to increase my (non-disabled) kids’ awareness and empathy. We also LOVED the illustrations with their cozy, wintery feel!

Like Me is a great, simple story that is enjoyable on face value, but also opens the door for very meaningful conversations about people’s different life experiences. Adults and children alike will identify with at least one of the characters while also being intrigued about ways they are like other characters they may have originally seen as different

This book is sooooo good.  The writing and artwork are both beautiful, and the message is so needed.  One of our sons has disabilities, and this book had us crying.  We know that God made him, but picture books have a way of solidifying truth for kids.  This is a must-read for every family, to help them know the truth of our loving Creator and to see that creating in each human being.  We have used some of Laura’s phrasing in our family, and it has been so helpful.  Our kids have even started saying it to other people!  I can’t recommend this book enough, whether you have disabilities in your home or not.  Well done, Laura and Skylar!

This book is such a gift! As a parent to a child with a disability, Laura put to words so many things I would want to tell to others and hope to teach our older kids as well. She covers so many different types of disabilities and challenges a child may face in Like Me. The ultimate message of these children are “like me” is spot on. This book should be available in every classroom and library.

I have followed the author for many years and trusts what she writes. I purchased this book as a way to foster conversations with my youngest son, who is very curious about the world and people around him. I want to remind him that no matter what abilities make us different, we were all created in the image of God. This is a beautiful book with lovely pictures and is a sweet story of how two brothers are very different but throughout the older brother is able to see all the ways he is like his little brother. It was very sweet, and I’m thankful to add it to our bookshelf.

My family—of ALL ages (my 2 year old all the way up to my Granny)—has LOVED this book. Laura, skillfully engages her audience with a story about how every one of us are made in Gods image, and all desire to be included! This is a wonderfully written book, and the pictures are beautifully done too. Our son uses a wheel chair and walker, so we can relate to how sometimes that’s all people see.  This book is a great reminder to acknowledge what makes that person special,  but then go beyond those things and see how we are alike in so many other ways!! This book has initiated meaningful conversations about disabilities and how deeply valuable All people are to God! So incredibly happy to see this book in circulation, an absolute must have for every Family book shelf!!!

Inclusive, educational book that is beautifully written. This book is such a gift! As a parent to a child with a disability, Laura put to words so many things I would want to tell to others and hope to teach our older kids as well. My oldest daughter had so many great and appropriate questions over the photos that lead to great discussion. Laura covers so many different types of disabilities and challenges a child may face in Like Me. The ultimate message of these children are “like me” is spot on. This book should be available in every classroom and library.

This is such a HELPFUL book no matter if your child has disabilities or simply wants to love people well who do. The story is sweet and relatable, and the illustrations are beautiful and engaging. What more could you want out of a Gospel-centered resource for kids?!

This book is incredible. Such a valuable resource for parents, caregivers, teachers, Sunday school teachers and family members. If you’ve ever been unsure how to talk to a child about disabilities, get this book!!! Beautifully illustrated and a wonderfully written.

This book deserves a spot on your bookshelf. My daughter has special needs and this book has been a wonderful way to give people a chance to understand the life and beauty of special needs. The story is told from the perspective of a boy who has a sibling with disabilities so the way it is approached is very accessible. I love the emphasis on finding ways that all people are similar and the value and dignity inherent in each person. Not to mention that the illustrations are beautiful! I would recommend this book for anyone.

This book beautifully invites you to see what life looks like in someone else’s shoes. Some will read it and find comfort in scenes that look like their world. Some will read it and have lots of questions. And some will read it and have a little bit both! No matter what your life looks like, this book serves as a great resource to learn how we are all alike because we are all made in God’s image. What a cool opportunity to learn about each other and, in effect, learn more about our God! Buy it. You won’t be disappointed!

Highly Recommend!! This book has such beautiful illustrations, and a meaningful message. Important and helpful to opening up conversations with our kids about how God made each of us, and how we may have differences but are all still image bearers!

I loved reading this book with my children. What stuck out to me is how down in our core, with whatever abilities we have, don’t we all just want others to ‘like me’? I loved how it illustrated a day in the life of a family with a child who has special needs. It showed me and my children how to interact with others who are different than us in such a gentle way. I’m thankful for how the book shows how all humans deserve dignity, because all humans are created in God’s image.

This book far exceeded my expectations. Our kids have asked to read it again and again and I’m loving that they’re learning that we’re more alike than we might think and all have value because we’ve been made in the image of God. It’s beautifully illustrated and so so sweet. A great pick!

As a mom of a young man with disabilities and multiple medical needs, I was excited to read this book.  I pre-ordered it immediately when I heard about it.  I have so many things that I could tell you about the story, the illustrations, the thoughts that are conveyed; but I think my 4 year old summed it up when he said, “Mommy, the words in this book are so beautiful”.

Please read this book for yourself and for the children in your influence.

As a mom with a young daughter with CP and speech apraxia, I felt so seen and encouraged by this story!  The illustrations are beautiful.  I had tears in my eyes when I saw the pages of the kids in a therapy gym - MAN, we spend a lot of time at physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, etc!

I like the fact that the story is written from the perspective of the older brother as he explains and reflects on life with his younger brother with special needs.  That means that the language and observations are simple and childlike, making it easier for young readers to connect with AND prompts discussion with your kiddos!

This book will be a great aid in supporting adults who want to help kids feel more confident and be more kind around kiddos who have special needs.

“Like Me” is such an incredible book. I’m so grateful Laura took the time to create a book that can help parents introduce disabilities to their children. My youngest son has had many physical delays and has received speech and occupational therapy over the last year. It was aa special moment when I read this book to our boys and my oldest said “Hey! The boy in the book goes to therapy just like my brother does!”. I loved how he related his life to the book and sees therapy as a normal service for children to need. This book is beautifully written and I’m so excited to share it will all my friends and family.

I’ve been a fan of Laura Wifler through her work with Risen Motherhood for a while. I’m excited that she’s now writing children’s books! Any Time, Any Place, Any Prayer is a great one, but I also was happy to learn she had written a book to help teach children about how to relate to people (specifically other children) with disabilities.

Like Me is a beautiful book that I think many will find helpful. It may be especially helpful for siblings of a child with disabilities. As the mother of a child with disabilities, Laura Wifler is uniquely qualified to speak on this subject. She does so beautifully using Gospel-centered truth and child-friendly prose to help children (and adults!) learn we are all made in God’s image and we all want to be loved, played with, talked to, etc. This is something my husband and I both desire to teach our children in learning how to love others like Christ and I’m thankful to have this book as a resource.

Our youngest child has spina bifida and he is almost 4. This book hit so hard and good in so many ways. I was so excited for it to finally come (as I ordered it in August) yesterday and read aloud to my kids before bedtime as they pointed out AFOs and walkers that our son Jory also has. So very grateful for books like this that show disability and family relationships, as well as speak to the power of those relationships and how we can all show kindness one to another no matter how we may get around the world or what devices or helps we each may need at some point or another. Very applicable and relatable! Thanks Laura!

If you are looking for a resource to open the dialogue on disability with your kids in a biblical way, Like Me is a great start! As a mom to a disabled child and an able-bodied child, it was refreshing to see these two experiences coexist in a story that does a beautiful job helping kids recognize how we share similar characteristics yet every one of us is different.

I was delightfully surprised by the beauty of this book in both art and message. My 3 year old has asked to read it multiple times a day every day since we got it, and it’s been such a great opportunity to talk easily and naturally about so many topics related to disability.

As a mother of a son with cognitive delays, we need more books sharing this message.  My son, and all people with extra needs, is more like others than he is different.  Like Me focuses on the ordinary in a life with a child with extra needs–many similarities to a life with a neurotypical child. Those both in and out of the church, need to hear and embrace this message.  We’re all created in God’s image and our physical and cognitive abilities don’t impede that! Laura is a gifted author who speaks from experience.  The illustrations are beautiful. Get a copy and share it with children and adults!

A children’s book that is truly unique. Beautiful illustrations and simple text, combine to make an amazing story about a boy and his brother with disabilities. Whether you know someone in your life who has disabilities or want to teach your children how to love them well or even help yourself love them better, this book is for you. An instant classic that I will be buying for our church’s children’s ministry and recommending to anyone I know.

Like Me has beautiful and detailed illustrations showing diversity and the differences that make each of us wonderful. I love how the power of the sibling relationship is shown. As a big sister of a woman with a disability, I have a responsibility for her. This book is a great introduction for kids who as adults will care for a sibling with special needs. Laura shows us that God has a plan for everyone in this tale of a normal day in the life of a family who celebrate and cherish each other.

Like Me is a lovely new picture book that I think everyone should add to their home libraries! It was a must have for us. I have never seen such a well done children’s book involving the topic of disability. The notable thing to me about this book is that it is a story- not just a book of facts, talking about disability, but a sweet story following a little boy through a day in the life with his little brother who has disabilities. Nonetheless, great truth is brought out through the story. The pictures are GORGEOUS and the story is engaging with plenty of room for discussion throughout. My children enjoyed seeing a book that showed some aspects of our life with their little brother, which is a rare find in a children’s book. This book is a gem and I hope you will consider tracking down your own copy to share with a child you love!

Written by Laura Wifler and illustrated by Skylar White, Like Me teaches children about relating to another child with disabilities and describes ways that children are the same and ways that they are unique. The illustrations are beautiful, warm, and diverse. I highly recommend Like Me! A wide audience including children, parents, medical professionals, therapists, counselors, teachers, librarians, and many more people will benefit from Like Me!
