The Battle is Real, But So Are God’s Promises

“Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.”

—Ephesians 6:10

Paul paints us a picture of believers putting on spiritual armor in Ephesians chapter 6. Whether you realize it or not, you are in the middle of a cosmic spiritual war at this very moment and you need spiritual protection. When we fight spiritual battles, they are close, intense, dangerous—in our face.

We have a very real enemy who comes at us with all the trickery of the fallen world, fallen humanity, and evil forces in the unseen realm. If that weren’t enough, our own fallenness is leveraged against us. Without God’s help, we’re toast. But Paul gives us clear marching orders and practical insight about successfully contending “against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms,” as the rest of verse 12 informs us.

The good news is that our victory is guaranteed if we’re on the right team. In 1 John 5:4, we read, "For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith."

Life is not like a YouTube video that has the ability to skip ahead to the end. We don’t see the outcomes of our current reality. But God has provided us with a credible account of our origins as well as the end of all things. If you have read the end of the canonical book we call the Bible, surely you’ve noticed one very important fact—we win.

Revelation 11:15 proclaims this wonderful statement, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign for ever and ever.” There are several other similar verses in Revelation, but the point is—this is all headed somewhere. The climactic book of Scripture demonstrates in amazing detail that God wins it all—and we win it with him. If we have trusted Christ as our savior, our future victory is 100% guaranteed.

God acknowledges that the battle is tough. He also points us to have faith in his promises when were in the middle of the explosions, shrapnel, and battlefield smoke. In 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 we read, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”

God promises not to leave us in the thick of the battle. Philippians 1:6 tells us to be confident in this fact, “that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Furthermore, he informs us in 1 Corinthians 10:13 that, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

As believers, we have no other wise choice but to advance into the heat of the battle. God promises it will be worth it. He promises he’ll be with us. He promises it will all make sense in eternity. And he promises that evil will one day be fully and perfectly dealt with.

No matter what you are facing right now in the world and in your personal life, know that you can turn to Him for strength, comfort, perspective, and courage. As you face life’s battles rest in Him and rest in your promised future as a believer in Christ. Keep fighting. I promise you it will be worth it! Finish strong my fellow warrior. You’ll be glad you did.
