Surrendering to the Everyday Pursuit of God’s Love

A love letter is waiting for you in your mailbox. It speaks of a conquering love that crosses every barrier to win your heart. Would you be surprised if I told you that our mighty Savior, the Lord Himself, writes you this letter and delights in you?

I’m guessing you’d be like me and immediately protest with explanations of how you’ve failed too many times, how you’re not that delightful when you lose your temper with your kids, or how God may have felt that way about you in times past, but not now.

I get it. I look around and see the mess in my kitchen, the mess I’ve made of some of my circumstances, and the secret messes in my own heart, and I simply can’t imagine that God would be in my midst…and love me, even still.

The Israelites in the Old Testament may have found it difficult to believe as well, but God was calling them to the truth about His love for them too. You see, Israel was just as forgetful as we are about God’s love for us.

Just look again at what the prophet Zephaniah proclaims:

God meets you right where you are.

God is mighty to save.

God rejoices over you.

God quiets you with His love.

God sings over you loudly!

God carries out each one of those promises to His people. What strikes me about this familiar verse is how deliberate God is to prove His faithful- ness. He doesn’t simply make Himself available for us to go to Him, but comes among us and blankets us with His intentional love. Isn’t that what we see in the life of our Savior, Jesus?

Jesus meets you right where you are.

Jesus is mighty to save.

Jesus rejoices over you.

Jesus quiets you with His love. Jesus sings over you loudly!

We think His delight in us is wrapped up in what we do for Him. We try to make ourselves more presentable, sign up for more church activities, and clean up our act before we dare whisper a prayer. But His delight in us is based on His character and not ours. That’s the good news.

God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).

Friend, what a difference it makes when you remember that God’s love letter is for you. Not the you ten years from now, not the you that memorized lots of verses as a kid, not the you that checks everything off your list…but the you that surrenders to His love. That’s the you He’s pursuing today.
