Our History

Harvest House Publishers was conceived in 1974 with just five titles and a dream in the heart of its founder, Bob Hawkins, Sr. to publish books to help the hurts of people. Within two years, five of its titles had sold over 100,000 copies and one title was on the best seller list for eight months in a row. By the late 1980s, Harvest House was among the top ten publishers of Christian literature. The company publishes more than 150 new books each year and offers a strong backlist of more than 1,200 titles.

Harvest House books gained a reputation of being affordable, trustworthy and practical by meeting people’s most current needs in three major categories: self-help (relationships, family, Christian living), Bible resources (Bibles, Bible studies, topical studies), and full color gift and children’s books featuring top licensed artists. More than 100 million Harvest House books have been sold worldwide in bookstores, gift stores, grocery stores, airports, mass market outlets, catalogs, on Internet sites, and in digital format online. Millions more have been sold in 75 languages around the world.

Bob Hawkins, Jr.

Bob Hawkins, Jr., president of Harvest House Publishers, has guided the family-owned business since 1991, when the baton was passed on to him by his father and company founder Bob Hawkins, Sr. Under Bob’s leadership, the company has published more than 3,000 new books on a wide range of topics geared mainly for lay-oriented Christian audiences. Before becoming president, Bob spent his first decade in Christian publishing as a marketing director. Today Hawkins continues to oversee the company’s focused publishing operations and provides fresh vision for the organization’s loyal and dedicated staff. His primary commitment is to encourage and inspire readers of all ages through producing and distributing trustworthy, biblically sound books that emphasize God’s grace and proclaim Jesus Christ as the answer to every human need. An avid runner since his teenage years, Bob can be found pounding the pavement year-round on the riverfront trails of TrackTown USA, otherwise known as Eugene, Oregon.

Bob Hawkins, Sr.
Harvest House Publishers was the vision of an innovative, risk-taking, faith-extending man by the name of RH “Bob” Hawkins Sr., who believed the paperback book could carry the Christian message to the masses. In 1974, at the age of 52, Bob realized his dream by founding Harvest House in Irvine, CA with five books. He served as president of the company until 1991, at which time he appointed his son, Bob Hawkins Jr. to take over. Bob Hawkins Sr. went to be with the Lord in 2010, and is remembered fondly by all who knew him.
