SEAHAWKS' SHAUN ALEXANDER REVEALS SECRETS TO SUCCESS IN NEW BOOK

EUGENE, OREGON—August 9, 2006—Fame, fortune, superstar status, adoring fans, national media coverage, gifted speaker, a loving family, a new book, and more. You would think a person who has reached this level of success might want to keep his secret recipe locked up in a vault. Not Shaun Alexander.

In his new book, Touchdown Alexander: My Story of Faith, Football and Pursuing the Dream (available now), Alexander talks about a basic concept that has paved the way for him to reach a very high level of achievement in so many areas of his life. Alexander admits he has lived a blessed life, but he also shares a vitally important key: it’s all about obedience.

He wears the first hint of that on his sleeve, literally on his jersey, in the number 37.

When Alabama beat LSU in 1996, Alexander broke a school record with 291 yards on 20 carries, including four touchdowns, and he did it all in his practice cleats and warm–up pads as a third–string, redshirt freshman. Before his star–revealing game, he had been searching the Bible to find a verse he could claim for his life, and he had found it.

The impact of that verse didn’t hit him until the end of the game, as teammates crowded around, yelling and slapping Alexander on the back.

“[I found my verse, and it’s] Psalm 37:4,” Alexander said to a friend. “It says, ‘Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.’” As soon as those words came out of his mouth, Shaun fell silent, stunned... (p. 78, Touchdown Alexander). Alexander’s storybook rise to the top had begun.

The book chronicles his success as a professional athlete, shares his Christian faith, and delves into his lifelong quest for excellence and outreach to others. The hardcover book, with writer Cecil Murphey ($22.99), is also available in audiobook form on three CDs (235 minutes, $19.99).

“This book will allow me to share my heart for family, faith, and fulfilling the dreams of life,” says Alexander. “Beyond my love for football, God has given me the vision and responsibility to be a role model and mentor to thousands of young men who need to see that yes, you can be a successful athlete and still love God and serve others.”

Alexander was the NFL’s MVP in 2005, and is the only player in the history of the league to score at least 15 touchdowns in five straight seasons. While leading the Seattle Seahawks to their first ever Super Bowl appearance last year, he racked up a league–high 1,880 yards rushing and the single season NFL record of 28 touchdowns.
